Where is the sunshine in Sunshine? Certainly in the name but we had almost none when we went there. I added them on Facebook and judging by the photos they post most of the time it is cloudy.
But hey – sun is not everything, the snow is important too. And this is where they get the points. 8 meters and more of snowfall per season is really good. And the have a speciality – the Delirium Dive.
Quite good. The ski area covers 3 mountains so you have a great variety of terrain. We went there in February 2017 and had a temperature of -33 Celcius – that was cold. So if you go there be prepared for really cold conditions – have the right clothing and put the right wax on your skis. There are some connections where you have to push yourself forward – and a ski that slides is a big advantage.
Definitely everyone. Goat’s eye is the mountain with most double black diamond runs and has the Wild West freeride zone. Lookout – apart from the Delirium dive area – and Standish are not so challenging so the whole family can have a lot of fun there. If you plan to enter the special areas Delirium and Wild West make sure to bring your avalanche equipment because your beacon will be checked when you enter through the gates. In case you only go there because of that areas check conditions first. Cloudy days or recent heavy snowfall might be a problem.
Can’t say much about that – but you could book a guide and give it a try.
Mountain restaurants/ lodges
There are some at the base, in the village and on Goat’s eye. We went to Mad Trappers – nice name. It was ok for a Snack and a beer.
How to get there
From Calgary take Highway 1 – if you go by car – or take the shuttle bus from Calgary airport. You can stay directly there at the Sunshine Mountain Lodge – ski-in/ ski-out or in Banff. There is a free shuttle service from Banff to Sunshine.
If the conditions are good and you are looking for an adventure, Delirium Dive and Wild West could be big fun – as you can see in this video.
